Sweating Cabinet Edges on an Electrolux Column Refrigerator

Droplets on the front of a built-in column unit in a humid Houston kitchen may be harmless, or they may point to a worn door seal.

Electrolux column refrigerators and freezers are often built in beside cabinets, which leaves little room for air. In a humid Houston kitchen, moisture on the front edge of the unit is common, but it is worth finding out why.

Why moisture forms

Cold surfaces attract water from warm, humid air. A little condensation on a hot, damp day is normal. Constant dripping is not.

What to look at

  1. Door seals. Feel along the whole gasket for gaps, tears or a flattened stretch. A dollar bill shut in the door should resist when pulled; if it slides out freely, that spot is leaking air.
  2. Door position. Confirm the door swings fully shut and that no tall bottle keeps it from closing.
  3. Room humidity. Check that the kitchen is not filling with steam from a dishwasher or open cooking pots next to the unit.
  4. Ventilation. Built-in columns need clear airflow around the grille. Remove anything blocking it.
  5. Temperature setting. A colder-than-needed setting increases sweating.

Signs that point to repair

  • Puddles form on the floor or soak the cabinet trim.
  • The gasket is torn or hard.
  • One door frame stays wet while the other stays dry.
  • Ice builds at the door edge in the freezer column.

Dripping at the edge may be only a surface sign. From the outside we cannot say whether the cause is the gasket, a heater strip in the frame or a bigger airflow problem, so we inspect before replacing anything.

Older built-in columns

Columns that are 10 to 15 years old often have worn gaskets and slightly sagging doors. We repair them, and we say so directly if the cabinet damage is more than a repair can solve.

Built-in columns are covered on the refrigerator repair page. Describe the wet edge on the contact form or by phone, and we will schedule an inspection with a three-hour arrival window. The cost of any gasket or heater work is put in writing for you to approve first.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
