What Er means
On Electrolux knob-controlled electric cooktops with the ESEC control, including the ICON E30EC65ESS, E36EC65ESS and E36EC75HSS, a glowing Er appears when power comes on, or returns after an outage, while a surface knob is still set to a heat level. It is a safety check, not a breakdown: the cooktop refuses to heat an element that was left on when power was restored. You will see Er lit and the element stays cold.
Common causes of Er
- A surface knob left on during power-up
- A knob that does not return fully to the off position
- Power restored after an outage with a knob still set
1. Look at every surface knob and turn each one fully to OFF. 2. Check that each knob sits all the way at the off mark and is not resting slightly past it. 3. Wait a moment and see whether Er clears. 4. If it stays lit with every knob off, switch the power supply off and then on, and call us if it remains.
- If Er stays with every knob fully off, a knob switch may be reporting on when it is not, so we test the knob switches one by one.
- We check that the knob shafts are not loose or bent, since that can leave a switch partly closed.
- We tell you the price in writing before replacing any switch.
Other Cooktop codes
Is Er a real problem?
Usually no. It is the cooktop reminding you a knob was on when power returned. Turning the knobs off normally clears it. Er tells you to look at the knobs, and in most homes the only fix needed is turning the knob that was left a little open.
Why does Er show after a power outage?
The cooktop will not start heating by itself when power returns, so it flags any knob left on. This protects you from a surprise hot element.
What if all knobs are off and Er stays?
Then a knob switch may be sending a false signal. Call us, and we test each switch before replacing anything. This is more common on older cooktops where the knob switches have worn, and we test each knob switch before suggesting a repair.

A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
