Frost Building Up in an Electrolux Freezer: What It Means

Light frost is normal, but thick ice on the back wall or around the door means air or defrost trouble. Here is how to read it.

A little frost in an Electrolux freezer is normal. Thick ice, ice that keeps returning after you clear it or frost on only one wall is a different story and usually has a cause you can trace.

Start with air and doors

Warm, humid air entering the freezer turns into frost. Check these first:

  • The door closes fully and the gasket seals evenly.
  • Nothing, such as a bag or box, props the door open or blocks the vents.
  • The door is not opened often during Houston summer afternoons.
  • The unit is level, with the door pulling shut on its own.

Pattern of frost

  1. Frost around the door edge usually means a seal problem.
  2. A sheet of ice on the back wall may mean a defrost issue, where the system no longer melts the frost the evaporator collects.
  3. Ice inside the drain area at the bottom suggests a blocked defrost drain.
  4. Frost on food packages only is often freezer burn from temperature swings, not a defrost problem.

What you can do now

Move the food into a cooler, unplug the freezer and leave the door open for several hours so the ice melts fully. Place towels to catch water. Dry the inside, restart it and watch whether the frost returns. If it returns within a few weeks, the defrost system is likely not working.

What we check

We look at the defrost heater, the thermostat or sensor that ends the cycle, the drain and the control. A freezer can show the same frost with any of these, so a visual check is not enough. We test each part.

Older freezers

Many upright freezers in garages run 15 years or more. We repair them, and we tell you if the repair is not worth it.

What we service in upright and chest freezers is listed on the freezer repair page. When you reach us by phone or the contact form, tell us how long the frost took to return. We will book a morning or afternoon arrival window, and you see the repair price in writing before we take anything apart.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
