What E1 means
An E1 alternating with the temperature on the Electrolux EILFU17GS and EILFU21GS upright all-freezers means the freezer has entered fail safe mode. The control found a temperature sensor, called a thermistor, giving a reading it cannot trust, so it runs on a built-in backup program instead of the real temperatures. The freezer usually keeps running, but it is no longer controlling the cabinet as precisely, and the display and alarm may sound. Pressing the mute button only quiets the alarm.
Common causes of E1
- Cabinet temperature thermistor
- Thermistor wiring or connector
- Control unit reading the sensor
1. Press the mute button to stop the alarm. 2. Check that the temperature shown on the display is still cold. 3. Keep the freezer door closed and avoid loading a lot of warm food. 4. Check that the door seals fully and nothing is holding it open. If E1 continues, call us for service.
- Fail safe mode tells us a sensor reading is wrong, but not whether the sensor, its wiring or the control is responsible, so we test the thermistor.
- We watch whether the freezer holds a steady temperature while it runs on the backup program.
- We quote the work in writing before we start, so you decide with the price in front of you.
Other Freezer codes
What is fail safe mode?
It is a backup way of running when the control stops trusting a sensor. The freezer keeps cooling on a fixed pattern, but it cannot react to the real temperature, so food can warm or freeze harder than intended.
Can I just mute it and carry on?
Muting quiets the alarm, but E1 stays until the sensor problem is dealt with. We would not leave valuable food in a freezer in fail safe mode for long.
How is E1 different from E2 and CE?
E1 is a sensor reading problem, E2 is a stuck key on the membrane keypad, and CE is a communication problem between the display and the control unit.
