What E 31 means
Electrolux ICON 36-inch induction cooktops, including the E36IC75FSS, show E 31 when the internal generator that drives the induction coils loses its timing sync with the rest of the electronics. In plain words, two parts of the cooktop stop agreeing on when to switch, so the control shuts the affected zones down rather than run them out of step. The number appears on the display and the zones will not heat until the error clears.
Common causes of E 31
- Generator board timing signal
- Connection between the generator board and the control
- Filter board output feeding the generator
- Loose harness plug in the module
1. Switch off every zone and leave the glass to cool. 2. Turn the power supply to the cooktop off and then on again. 3. Try one zone with a pan that matches the ring size. 4. If E 31 returns, write down which zones were on and call us with the number.
- Restarting clears a one-time sync loss, but it does not tell us which board is dropping the signal, so we test the generator and filter boards in turn.
- We inspect the harness plugs between the boards, since a loose plug can cause an error that comes and goes.
- We give you the price in writing before any part is ordered.

What does sync error mean for cooking?
The cooktop cannot coordinate its induction power, so it stops heating to protect itself. Your pans and cookware are not the cause. The induction coils depend on that timing, and heating stays off until the electronics agree again, however good your cookware is.
Will switching the power off fix it?
It can clear a single occurrence if you turn the supply off and back on. If E 31 keeps returning, the cause is inside the cooktop and needs testing.
Do you repair this model often?
Yes, we work on these induction cooktops regularly, and we say plainly when a repair is not worth the cost on an older unit. Many owners keep these cooktops for years, so we look at the age and condition before suggesting a board.
