What E8 / E9 means

E8 and E9 are temperature sensing error alarms on Electrolux ICON built-in all-freezer columns with the Custom Set control, models such as the E32AF85PQS, E32AF75JPS, EI32AF80QS and EI32AF65JS. The alarm sounds after about one hour, and the display alternates E8 or E9 with -10 F. The control then holds the temperature the factory set, since it cannot read the cabinet sensor properly. The freezer often still cools, but not to the setting you chose.

Common causes of E8 / E9

  • Cabinet temperature sensor
  • Sensor wiring or its connector
  • Main control board reading the sensor
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Press Alarm Off to quiet the alarm. 2. Keep the door closed as much as you can. 3. Check the food in the freezer for softening, and note whether the cabinet feels as cold as usual. 4. Call us for service, since the control is no longer regulating the temperature you set.

! Why to stop there
  • The alarm points to the sensing circuit, but a bad sensor, a loose connector or the board can all look the same, so we test each.
  • We check the real cabinet temperature, because the control is running on the factory setting.
  • The price is written before we start, and the work carries a 30-day warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
E8 / E9E8 / E9 questions
What does the factory temperature mean?

The control stops using your setting and holds a default temperature instead, because it cannot read the sensor reliably. That is why the freezer may feel different even though it runs.

Why does the display show -10 F?

It alternates E8 or E9 with -10 F while the alarm is active. That is part of the alarm message, not a reading of the cabinet temperature.

Is E8 different from E9?

They are both temperature sensing errors on this control. Both point to the same kind of problem, so the fix is the same type of check. We test the sensors and the wiring to see which circuit is involved.
