What HI means
On the Electrolux EILFU17GS and EILFU21GS upright all-freezers, HI along with the HI Temp light means the freezer temperature has stayed above 23 F for at least an hour. That is above the safe limit for frozen food. The alarm sounds and the display shows HI until the cabinet cools back down. Common reasons are a door left ajar, a large load of warm food, or a cooling problem. Pressing the mute button stops the sound but does not cool the freezer.
Common causes of HI
- Door open, loose seal or recent warm load
- Evaporator fan or defrost system
- Sealed system cooling
- Cabinet temperature sensor
1. Press the mute button to quiet the alarm. 2. Make sure the door is fully closed and nothing is blocking the seal. 3. Do not load a lot of warm food, and keep the door closed. 4. Check that the freezer has power. If HI stays on after several hours, move food to another freezer and call us.
- The alarm tells us the cabinet got too warm, not why, so we check airflow, defrost and cooling in that order.
- If the cooling system is struggling, we tell you what it would cost and whether repairing an older freezer makes sense.
- We give a written price before any work, and the repair has a 30-day warranty.

How warm does the freezer have to get for HI to show?
The control looks for a cabinet temperature above 23 F for at least one hour. A brief door opening should not trigger it, but a long open door or a failing cooling system can.
Is my food safe?
That depends on how warm it got and for how long. Food that still has ice crystals and feels cold may be fine, but use good judgment, and do not refreeze thawed items.
Should I turn the freezer off?
No. Leave it on, keep the door closed and call us so we can find out why it warmed up, because switching it off would only make the food warmer.
