What E42 means
E42 on an Electrolux Wave-Touch or IQ-Touch front-load washer such as the EWFLW65HIW, EIFLW55HIW, EFLS627UTT or ELFW7637AT means the control cannot recognize the door lock, which the chart calls a door lock device failure. Until the lock reads correctly the washer will not start. Washers of this age are still running in many Houston laundry rooms, and we say plainly when a repair makes no sense.
Common causes of E42
- The door lock device
- The latch and striker not engaging
- The wiring from the lock to the control
- The main control board
1. Open the door and make sure nothing, such as a sock or debris, is blocking the latch. 2. Close the door firmly and listen for a click. 3. Look at the latch and the striker to see that both are working and line up. 4. If E42 stays after that, call us and do not force the door.
- E42 and E41 look alike, so we test the lock and the switch separately.
- We check the wiring before replacing the lock.

What is the difference between E41 and E42?
E41 is about the door switch reading open. E42 is about the control not recognizing the door lock. They look alike, so we test the switch and the lock separately.
Is E42 the door lock failing?
It can be, but the latch, the striker or the wiring may also be involved. We test the lock and its wiring to be sure before we suggest a part.
Can I force the door lock to work?
No. Forcing the door or the lock can damage the latch and make the repair bigger. If the door will not latch normally, leave it and call us.
