What E51 means
E51 on Electrolux Wave-Touch and IQ-Touch dryers such as the EIED55HIW, EIGD55HIW, EWED65HSS and EWMED65HIW is a Motor Relay failure. The relay that switches the drum motor is stuck open or stuck closed, or the wiring to it is damaged. The motor might run continuously or not start at all. These older dryers are still in many homes, and we repair them.
Common causes of E51
- Motor relay on the control board
- Wiring to the motor
- Motor itself
1. Open the door and turn the drum by hand to feel for rubbing. 2. Close the door and press Start once. 3. If the drum does not turn or will not stop, do not keep trying. 4. Call us with the code and what the drum did.
- A motor relay can stick on the board or the wiring can break, and we trace the motor circuit before replacing anything.
- We check the board last, since replacing it is the larger cost.
- We say plainly when a repair is not worth it on an older dryer.
Other Dryer codes
Why would the motor run nonstop?
If the relay is stuck closed, power keeps flowing to the motor. That is why we do not suggest leaving it running.
What if the drum does not turn at all?
The relay or the wiring may be open. We test the circuit and then the motor.
Is it worth fixing an older dryer?
Often, if the board or relay is the only problem. We tell you honestly if the repair costs too much for the dryer.
